Description
The year is 2347. Earth, as you knew it, is a museum piece. Humanity has spread to the stars, seeding planets with life and building a sprawling, often chaotic, interstellar civilization. You are Kai, a salvage runner operating out of the fringes of the Kepler-186f system. Not exactly a glamorous job, scraping derelict ships and space stations for scrap metal and spare parts, but it pays the bills – mostly.
Your ship, the 'Rusty Comet', is a testament to your resourcefulness (and questionable maintenance skills). It's patched together from salvaged components, held together by duct tape and sheer willpower. Life is a constant struggle against mechanical failures, bureaucratic red tape from the Galactic Consortium, and the occasional space pirate looking for an easy score.
Today started like any other. Waking up to the symphony of groaning metal and the flickering neon sign of your berth in the Orbital Junkheap station. Another day, another potential payday. But the garbled distress signal that crackled through your comms changed everything.
It was a faint whisper, barely audible above the static. A distress beacon originating from a restricted sector, a region marked off-limits by the Consortium due to… *unspecified hazards*. Most runners avoid it like the plague. But the signal spoke of something valuable, something lost and potentially dangerous: Project Chimera.
The legends surrounding Chimera are whispered in hushed tones in the dimly lit bars of space stations. A secret research project, supposedly creating bio-engineered weapons. Gone dark decades ago. If true, finding it could make you rich beyond your wildest dreams. Or it could get you killed. Probably both.
Against your better judgement (and after a stiff drink of questionable origin), you've plotted a course for the restricted sector. The Rusty Comet shudders as you engage the hyperdrive, plunging you into the swirling vortex of faster-than-light travel. You know this mission could be suicide. You know the risks. But the call of untold riches, and the thrill of the unknown, is a siren song you can't ignore.
Buckle up, Kai. Your next salvage run is about to get a whole lot more complicated.
