Description
The flickering neon sign outside barely spells "A.R.C.H.I.V.E." correctly. Rain streaks down the grimy window, blurring the already chaotic display of arcane tools, dusty books, and half-assembled clockwork contraptions crammed within. You pull the collar of your threadbare coat tighter, the chill seeping deeper than the damp air. This is it. The last lead. Or, more likely, another dead end.
You push open the creaking door, a rusty bell clanging weakly overhead. The air inside is thick with the smell of old paper, ozone, and something vaguely resembling burnt toast. Behind a towering stack of precariously balanced tomes, a figure emerges. Professor Eldritch, if his website hadn't led you astray. He's a wizened man, his wild white hair defying gravity, his spectacles perpetually perched on the tip of his nose.
He peers at you over the rim of his spectacles. "You must be… ah, yes. The one who answered my cryptic advertisement. Come in, come in. Don't mind the mess, chaos is merely order yet undiscovered." He gestures vaguely towards a chair buried under a pile of disassembled brass gears. You clear a space and perch cautiously.
"You see," the Professor continues, his voice a low rumble, "I have a proposition for you. A dangerous one, I admit. But one of… unparalleled opportunity." He leans forward conspiratorially, the flickering gaslight casting dancing shadows on his face.
"I've been tracking a temporal anomaly. A rip in the fabric of spacetime, if you will. It manifests as… echoes. Remnants of forgotten timelines, bleeding into our own. These echoes are not merely passive observations. They're… interactive. Influential."
He pauses, a glint in his eye. "I believe I've located the nexus point. The source of the anomaly. But I need someone… untainted. Someone outside the established temporal streams. Someone… like you."
He pulls out a small, intricately carved box. Inside, nestled on a bed of velvet, is a tarnished pocket watch. "This is a Chronometer. It will allow you to navigate these echoes. To observe, to learn… and perhaps, even to alter the past. But be warned. The past is a fragile thing. A single alteration can have… unforeseen consequences."
He offers you the watch. "Are you willing to accept this responsibility? Are you prepared to delve into the echoes of time? The fate of reality itself may depend on your answer."
