Description
The air crackles with unseen energy. Above, the crimson sun bleeds across a sky choked with dust motes the size of pebbles. You cough, a dry, rattling sound that echoes in the vast, silent canyon. Your name is Xylia, though it tastes like ash on your tongue. You barely remember it, along with most things before the Collapse.
The Collapse. They called it that, back when anyone still bothered to name things. A convenient euphemism for the slow, agonizing death of the old world. Water dried up, the earth cracked, and the whispers started. Whispers that drove men mad, whispers that promised power in exchange for… things. Unspeakable things.
You clutch the worn leather pouch at your hip. Inside, nestled amongst scavenged bolts and a handful of nutrient paste rations, is the Resonance Stone. It hums faintly against your skin, a constant reminder of your mission, the reason you're braving this desolate wasteland. The Elders, the withered remnants of your once-thriving village of Whispering Gulch, tasked you with finding the Source.
They say the Source is the key. The key to restoring balance to the world, to silencing the whispers, to bringing back the rain. But the path to the Source is fraught with peril. Bandits, warped by the wasteland and driven by desperation, roam the canyons. Crystalline Crawlers, monstrous insectoids mutated by the strange energies that permeate the land, lurk in the shadows. And then there are the Cultists, the fanatics who worship the whispers and seek to hasten the world's demise.
Before you lies the Whispering Pass, a treacherous route known for its disorienting winds and the strange illusions they create. Legend says it guards the first key, a piece of the puzzle that must be solved before you can even begin to comprehend the true nature of the Source.
Take a deep breath, Xylia. The fate of Whispering Gulch, perhaps even the fate of what little remains of the world, rests on your shoulders. The sun is sinking, painting the canyon walls in shades of blood orange and bruised purple. The air grows colder. The whispers grow louder. Your journey begins now.
