Description

The flickering gaslight casts elongated shadows across the rain-slicked cobblestones of Oakhaven. You pull your collar higher, the damp chill seeping into your bones despite the layers of wool. The air hangs heavy with the scent of coal smoke, brine from the nearby docks, and something else… something subtly acrid and unsettling. A faint tang of ozone, perhaps, or the ghost of something burned. You arrived in Oakhaven just hours ago, summoned by a cryptic telegram from a name you barely remember: Professor Eldridge Blackwood, a distant relative on your mother's side. The telegram spoke of urgent matters, of a breakthrough on the precipice of either unimaginable glory or catastrophic failure, and of a desperate need for… your particular skills. What those skills are, Blackwood failed to elaborate on. Perhaps you're a skilled linguist, adept at deciphering ancient texts. Maybe you possess a knack for unlocking complex mechanisms, a natural aptitude for engineering. Or perhaps your mind is simply a steel trap, capable of absorbing and processing information with unnerving speed. Whatever the reason, Blackwood believed you to be the key to his success, or perhaps, the only safeguard against his utter ruin. Now, standing before the imposing wrought-iron gates of Blackwood Manor, the air feels charged, almost vibrating with an unseen energy. The mansion looms above you, a gothic monstrosity of darkened stone and stained-glass windows that seem to glare down with silent judgement. The only sound is the relentless drumming of the rain against the slate roof and the distant mournful hoot of an owl. A single, flickering lantern hangs beside the gate, casting an eerie glow on a small, tarnished brass plaque. Etched into the metal are the words: "Enter at your own peril. Knowledge is a dangerous mistress." Do you dare to heed the Professor's call? Do you push open the gates and venture into the heart of Blackwood Manor, knowing that whatever awaits you inside could change everything you thought you knew about the world, and perhaps, even yourself? The choice, as always, is yours. But be warned… some doors are best left unopened. Some secrets are better left buried. And some knowledge… well, some knowledge is simply too terrible to bear.
